Youth & Drug and Alcohol Sector’s Vision for Young People

Consultation was undertaken with approximately 70 key informants across youth and drug and alcohol services. From this consultation the following Sector’s Vision was developed.

Young person centred
A holistic approach is fundamental to effective drug and alcohol service delivery for young people.
Youth engagement and participation
The self-directed engagement of young people in the delivery of services and the establishment of trusted relationships over time is a feature of drug and alcohol service delivery. Feedback from young people is essential in the quality assurance process.
Social Justice
The rights of young people as clients are paramount and are upheld through principles of service delivery.
Partnerships and Collaboration
Strengthening and supporting existing service delivery and partnerships (relationships between agencies in service provision) is essential in meeting the current and future needs of young people.
Relationships
The role and involvement of family and significant others is considered and supported in working with young people.
Flexibility
Service policies are flexible and are not overridden by selective or prescriptive criteria which potentially restrict young people’s access to a diverse range of service responses.
Access to Services
A range of culturally, gender and age appropriate drug and alcohol services are available to meet the particular and diverse needs of young people aged 12-25 in Queensland.
Inclusion (No wrong door)
Young people’s drug and alcohol use is addressed within the context of other broad and complex needs.
Approaches
A range of approaches are required to reduce the harm from drug and alcohol use, including supply reduction, demand reduction and harm reduction strategies.
Valued & Supported
Workers are valued and supported to provide a range of culturally, gender and age appropriate drug and alcohol services to meet the diverse needs of young people in Queensland.
