The Victorian Child Safety Commissioner has published a report titled "It is the story of all of us: Learning from Aboriginal communities about supporting family connection". This report sought the views of Aboriginal families who were engaged in kinship care arrangements, to find out what it takes to support these arrangements, but also to understand the challenges.

Increasingly, research is showing that child maltreatment can have effects on the developing brain. The Australian Institute of Family Studies have recently published a paper providing an overview of the research in this area. It gives an overview of basic brain systems and then explains the ways that child abuse and neglect can impact these. Anyone who works with young people who have experienced past abuse and neglect should be aware of the this area of research.

The National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NECTA) have published a new report titled "Young Workers and Workplace Safety: Guidelines for Managing Alcohol and Other Drug Risk". This report provides an overview of alcohol and drug workplace safety risks that might effect young workers, and gives employers recommendations to reduce the risks. It is a very useful resource, particularly for Queensland with large numbers of young people employed in mining and related industries.

The National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee (NIDAC) are holding their next conference in Fremantle, Western Australia, from June the 6th - 8th. The theme of this year's conference is "Beyond 2012: Leading the Way into Action", with a diverse range of speakers presenting on topics related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and alcohol and other drug use. The conference organising committee have just announced a grants program to support workers attending the conference, especially those from regional and remote areas of Australia. Closing date for grant applications is March 9th, so get in quick.

The Australian Indigenous Health InfoNet have developed a new section of their website, specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing workers. The site contains links to key facts, publications and resources covering a wide issues including grief and loss through to substance use and mental health. This comprehensive collection of resources is easily searchable, and broken down into topic area.

The National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) have released a report titled "Alcohol and Other Drug VET Qualifications and Training Providers Database", which provides up to date details of accredited alcohol and other drug (AOD) training course available throughout Australia. The report includes information on publically funded TAFE courses, as well as industry-based and private registered training organisations. The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) have published a report looking at the role of "assertive outreach" in reducing homelessness. Overseas evidence suggests that the approach has been successful, so "assertive outreach" has become a central part of the Australian Government's response to homelessness nationally. This study sought the views of policy makers, service providers and service users in Brisbane, Sydney and Darwin to help understand how this policy is translating to practice in the Australian context.

The 13th International Mental Health Conference will be held from the 6th to the 8th of August 2012 at the Outrigger Inn at the Gold Coast. The theme is "Positive Change: Investing in Mental Health" and the call for papers is open here. The Conference, among over things, will explore the mental health issues of young Australians (aged 18 - 24 years) struggling with schizophrenia, depression, suicidal thoughts, bipolar, anxiety disorders and drug use and drug induced psychosis.

The World Health Organization's Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) is a clinically and scientifically validated questionnaire that screens for all levels of problem or risky substance use in adults. Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA) has developed draft versions of the test for young people.
It's available now here, however please note that they are draft versions only. Feedback should be emailed to dassa@health.sa.gov.au
