The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare have published a report looking at rates of substance use in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people between 2002 and 2008. The report shows lower rates of alcohol consumption overall when compared with non-Indigenous Australians, however it also found around double the rate of binge drinking. Rates of long-term risky drinking were the same as those seen in non-Indigenous people. Smoking rates were found to be declining, although still significantly higher than non-Indigenous people, while rates of illicit rug use remained stable.
