Open Doors youth service specialises in working with young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), and those who are exploring their sexuality and or gender identity. They have announced a new email list, which has been launched for anyone working with young people aged between 12 and 24 who wants to find out more about supporting LGBT young people. The e-list provides a way for workers to share info, find out about professional development, ask questions, and to stay in touch with workers dealing with similar issues across the state.

Back in December 2010, the Queensland Intravenous AIDS Association hosted a lecture by drug policy expert Dr Ethan Nadelmann. Dr Nadelmann challenges many of the assumptions about drug control policies, and believes that there are significant unintended negative outcomes from the policy position of prohibition. In his lecture, he puts forward a rationale for change, and gives an overview of alternative strategies available. The lecture was recorded by ABC Radio National, and is now available on their website.

The Network of Alcohol and other Drug Agencies (NADA) in conjunction with the Community Restorative Centre have put together a website to assist alcohol and other drug workers who support clients involved in the criminal justice system. While some of the information on the website is NSW specific, much of the content is relevant to workers anywhere. Included is information and research on all aspects of AOD work with clients involved in the criminal justice system including specific health issues relevant to criminal justice clients, impacts of criminal records on treatment options as well as information on motivation to change in mandated clients.

The Communities and Families Clearinghouse have published a guide to assist workers in supporting young people who are parents. The document includes practice considerations when planning or delivering services to young parents, provides an overview of a strengths-based approach, and includes a handy check-list of the key components of good practice service delivery to young people who are parents.

The latest National Drug Strategy 2010-2015 has been released by the federal government. The strategy maintains the harm minimisation focus on supply, demand and harm reduction, whilst placing more emphasis on workforce development in the AOD sector. The document also contains, for the very first time, performance measures to attempt to track progress on the stated goals.

QADREC at the University of Queensland have announced a new subject offered in their Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Studies course commencing semester 2, 2011. The subject is titled "Drugs and Young People" and covers the changing patterns of drug use and related harms experienced by young people. The degree is offered in a flexible format, ideal for working people who need to fit study around other commitments.

Suicide Prevention Australia have released a position statement
on youth suicide. The document provides an overview of
the evidence around risk factors for suicide (such as individual,
social and contextual risk factors) along with the evidence for
protective factors. The position statement also
discusses the evidence base for the full range of prevention
programs along with recommendations to reduce youth suicide in
Australia.

The Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) have launched a new database containing links to published literature on all aspects of early psychosis and youth mental health. The database provides a one-stop-shop for accessing information, with an easy to use search feature. To access the database you'll need to register, but it's free and very easy to do. The Australian National Council on Drugs this week sent a letter to every school principal in Australia, urging them to reconsider the use of alcohol in school fundraising events. Similar to the changes that have occurred in schools with regards to "sun smart" initiatives, and more recently healthy eating campaigns, the ANCD believe that promoting alcohol at school related events can send the wrong message to young people.
