The Western Australian Commissioner for Children and Young People have just released a report titled "Speaking Out: About Reducing Alcohol Related Harm on Children and Young People". The report looked at the views of around 300 young people aged 14-17 from urban and regional areas of Western Australia, on what influences their decisions to drink, and what strategies do young people think should be employed to reduce the harm. A range of views were shared from the young people, including their opinions on raising the legal drinking age, their thoughts on parents supplying alcohol, and their opinions about prevention campaigns.

The Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse have published a resource sheet titled "Adolescent violence in the home: the missing link in family violence prevention." The resource sheet provides an overview of research into family violence and presents some stark results. While it is acknowledged that both male and female adolescents can be violent towards either male or female parents, the evidence suggests that it is much more common for male adolescents to use violence against their mothers. The paper considers this pattern within the context of intergenerational violence against women and suggests that addressing adolescent family violence is crucial to preventing further violence against women.

The Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) are consulting with young people in remote parts of Australia about ways to improve access to employment and participation opportunities. The survey only takes ten minutes and (like all quality surveys) young people who complete the survey go into the draw to an iPod Touch. There is also a paper-based survey available for young people without access to the internet. Forward this on to any young people in remote parts of Queensland so we can make sure that their voices are heard.

We've linked to this site before, but we think it's worth re-visiting. Siblings of a young person with an alcohol or other drug problem are often left out of the picture when it comes to support. The team at SHARC (Self help addiction resource centre) have developed http://www.siblingsupport.com.au as a resource for young people with a sibling experiencing problems with alcohol and other drug use. The site contains stories from siblings about dealing with a brother or sister with an AOD problem, as well as fact sheets on ways to support them and how to look after yourself throughout the process.
