DOVETAIL WEBINAR: UNDERSTANDING INHALANTS: TUESDAY 28TH OF JUNE 10AM

The misuse of inhalants continues to be an issue around Queensland.  Common products like glues, deodorants and petrol are easily available, and managing young people who engage in inhalant misuse can be complex. Dovetail's own Cameron Francis is hosting a one hour webinar on this topic titled "Understanding Inhalants".  The presentation will provide an overview of the history of inhalant misuse, and overview of the products that can be misused, information on the health effects of inhalants as well as best practice approaches to managing intoxication and regular use of inhalants.  The presentation will be recorded and made available afterwards on the Dovetail website and YouTube channel.

THE 2016 YOUTH AOD CONFERENCE MELBOURNE 25-26 AUGUST

The Australian Youth AOD Conference is in it's second year and more than ever seeks to engage with participants around practice, and demonstrate how their skills and compassion is valued by offering a range of topics, the chance to meet their colleagues, and celebrate the unique work done in this field. This year's conference will focus on both the personal and structural conditions that impact on young people. Day One will present a range of perspectives on these conditions and their influence on the lives of young people. Day Two will focus on countering these conditions by giving participants the chance to learn new skills and knowledge to take back to the field, and enrich their role in facilitating positive developmental experiences. Early bird closes 1st July 2016.

INSIGHT CALENDAR AVAILABLE NOW

Insight, the Alcohol and Drug Training and Workforce Development service operated by the Metro North Mental Health - Alcohol and Drug Service, has launched their training and webinar calendar for the first semester of 2016. All the Insight training is free of charge, and topics including "Conducting effective group work with AOD patients", "Understanding Psychoactive Drugs", and "Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for Drug Use".  The webinars occur every Wednesday morning from 10am.  Topics include Dr Kate Hall presenting on "ERIC: Emotional Regulation and Impulse Control" on Wednesday April 13th, and Dovetail's own Cameron Francis presenting on "Mass Media for Preventing Illicit Drug Use" on Wednesday May 4th.

MANAGING ADDICTION: FREE ONLINE COURSE

The University of Adelaide is offering a range of free online courses, including "Managing Addiction: A framework for successful treatment."  The course provides an understanding of addictive behaviours, identifying people who are at risk of developing an addiction and an overview of intervention and treatment options.  The course runs for five weeks, and will take about 2 - 3 hours per week to complete.  There is no cost, unless you'd like a verified certificate, which costs $50.

FREE ONLINE TRAINING FROM THE PENINGTON INSTITUTE

The Penington Institute has launched three free online learning modules suitable for any worker who engages with people who use alcohol and other drugs.  The modules include "Introduction to crystal methamphetamine", "Introduction to Brief Interventions" and "Introduction to young people and drugs".  All you need to do is register a user account and you can begin the online learning package.  Certificates are available on completion.

VALUE MENTAL HEALTH: FREE MENTAL HEALTH WEEK FORUM

In recognition of Mental Health Week, Children's Health Queensland is running a free information forum on Thursday 8th of October at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital. R U OK DAY: THURSDAY 10TH OF SEPTEMBER
