DATE CLAIMER: WALK ON THE WILD SIDE 8

The organisers of the Walk on the Wild Side event have date-claimed Friday 15 May 2015 for their annual one-day symposium for health professionals examining substance use and society. The theme for this year is curiously titled "Harm Maximisation" and, like last year, the event will be held at the Education Centre at the Royal Women's and Brisbane Hospital in Brisbane.  The full program will be released in mid February.  For information phone 07 3646 1525.  Mark it in your diaries now!

AUSTRALIAN WINTER SCHOOL 2015: CALL FOR ABSTRACTS EXTENDED

The organisers for The Australian Winter School (AWS) 2015 - presented by Lives Lived Well - are currently seeking submissions for conference speakers and workshops to inspire delegates and introduce them to new ideas and ways of thinking and working in AOD treatment. Abstracts are welcome on a wide range of drug and alcohol topics including: early intervention, prevention & health promotion; working with Indigenous communities; young people, alcohol & drugs; pharmaceuticals; NSPs, PIEDs; measuring impacts & outcomes; partnerships; domestic and family violence; child safety; alcohol, drugs and the justice system; family and child centred practice; social marketing; and FASD.

Unleash Potential is the theme for 2015, and if it's anything like last time, it will be the must-attend conference of the year!

AUSTRALIAN WINTER SCHOOL 2015: CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

We're fairly confident in declaring the 2014 Australian Winter School the best conference that we've been lucky enough to attend - and the 2015 conference is set to be even bigger and better.  The conference is happening in Brisbane from the 22 to 24th of July 2015, and the conference organisers at Lives Lived Well have just announced the call for abstracts.  There will once again be a youth stream and we'd love to see some of the amazing services from around Queensland submit abstracts and show us your great work.  Put the date in your diary now!

AUSTRALIAN WINTER SCHOOL 2014

The Australian Winter School Conference is fast approaching, happening on the 24th and 25th of July at Rydges Hotel, Southbank (Brisbane).  The youth stream features a number of presentations that will be of interest to Dovetail subscribers.  Dr Steven Leicester (National Director of AOD for Headspace) will be presenting "A national AOD program for young people: The Headspace journey", Andrew Bruun (Director of Services for YSAS) will be presenting "We know what works: let's get on with putting it into practice" and Queensland's own Annemaree Callander (CEO of Brisbane Youth Service) and Genevieve Sinclair (Manager of YETI) are presenting "Hardspace: engaging vulnerable young people in drug and alcohol services".  Dovetail will have a trade stall at the conference, so if you are coming along make sure you say hello!

DRUG AND ALCOHOL NURSES OF AUSTRALASIA CONFERENCE: JUNE 18 -20TH

The Drug and Alcohol Nurses of Australasia Conference is coming up on June the 18th to 20th in Sydney, and we are very excited to have Dovetail's own Cameron Francis presenting on "Emerging Drugs: The challenges of responding to the next generation of drugs."  The program contains a number of other fascinating speakers including Dr Adrian Carter talking on" Addiction Neuroethics: The ethical and social implications of neuroscience research on addiction", Dr Alex Wodak presenting on "The collapse of the case for drug prohibition: What will the next drug policy be?" and Associate Professor Simon Adamson presenting "Controlled Drinking: The science and the art".

CALLS FOR PAPERS: 7TH AUSTRALASIAN DRUG AND ALCOHOL STRATEGY CONFERENCE

The Queensland Police Service and the Australian Federal Police are hosting the 7th Australasian Drug and Alcohol Strategy Conference, to be held in Brisbane from Tuesday 17th to Friday the 20th of March 2015.  The theme of the conference is "Building Collaborative Partnerships: Responding within and across borders" and the conference expects to bring together police, health, policy, academics and industry representatives.  The conference organisers are currently requesting abstracts for either oral presentations, workshops or posters.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: ONE DAY SYMPOSIUM IN BRISBANE

The annual "Walk on the Wild Side" symposium on substance use is being held in Brisbane on Friday the 16th of May at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.  The symposium features speakers covering a range of topics such as  waste water analysis, trends in pain management, latest developments in motivational interviewing, and withdrawal management.  Early bird registrations are available for $100 until the 30th of April, and will then be $150.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE

The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) has announced that they are accepting applications for funding under their Alcohol and Other Drugs Conference Program.  There are two streams of funding available: up to $10 000 is available for people wanting to run an alcohol and other drug conference, otherwise individuals (with their managers support) can apply for up to $2000 to attend a relevant alcohol and other drug conference.  Applications for funds close on the 19th of March so start planning now.

ADVANCING YOUTH AOD PRACTICE SUMMIT

The Victorian Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS) are hosting a Youth AOD Practice Summit in Melbourne on Friday 28th of March, 2014.  The summit is designed for youth AOD workers who engage with some of the most vulnerable young people in our communities.  The summit will give practitioners the chance to contribute to the conversation about best practice in the field, and will result in the publication of a summit report that will identify key issues for the sector. Dovetail's Cameron Francis will be presenting, alongside specialists in areas such as trauma, self-injury, methamphetamine treatment approaches and much more.  Places are limited, so get in quick.  For those unable to make it along, Dovetail will be there live tweeting the action and we'll also send out the Summit report to Dovetail subscribers once it is released.

AUSTRALIAN WINTER SCHOOL CONFERENCE 17TH - 19TH OF JULY

The Australian Winter School Conference is almost here - happening in Brisbane from the 17th to the 19th of July.  Dovetail's own Cameron Francis will be presenting "Ahead of the curve: update on latest trends in youth alcohol and drug use in Australia", which will provide an overview of the rise of new psychoactive substances but also new performance and image enhacing drugs like weight loss drugs, the tanning drug "Melanotan" and even erectile dysfunction medications.  Implications for service providers will be discussed, including understanding the role of "early intervention" and considering the relevance or otherwise of the new recovery agenda.  It's not too late to register, so get in quick!
