MODULE AIM

Completion of this module will enable practitioners to manage the challenges of having honest conversations with both their patients as well as with prescribers.

This module provides participants with a theoretical understanding of how to engage in challenging conversations and avert communication breakdown through implementing micro-counselling skills. It will also provide examples of applying these skills to having conversations with medical practitioners.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • identify skills that are paramount in the practice of de-escalation
  • recognise and employ strategies to support saying no
  • demonstrate knowledge and confidence in addressing the topics of dependence, tolerance and deprescribing with the patient
  • articulate strategies for engaging in potentially difficult conversations with prescribers about concerns with medicines  
  • identify next steps if concern is present about a prescription and an agreement cannot be reached with the prescriber.  
LENGTH1 hour
CPDThis module is accredited for 1 hour of Group 1 CPD (or 1 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 1 hour of Group 2 CPD (or 2 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities with APC.
